Migrant workers doing jobs Americans refusing to do

| March 22, 2006 8:00 PM

Yes, Mr. Litsinger, we must control the migration of illegal aliens from Mexico. However, you failed to address the fact that migrant workers are a needed element in our society. These workers fill the jobs that we, Americans, feel are beneath us. Apparently picking produce doesn't pay well enough.

Understandably, growers can't afford to pay workers $10 per hour or offer a 401K, health insurance and paid vacations. If they did, how would consumers feel about a $5 orange or apple?

Fact is, if we don't get these job perks, we'd rather collect unemployment. It appears to be a no-win situation. We don't want the influx of migrant workers, who take their $13 billion in paychecks back to Mexico, nor do we want to do the work ourselves.

These workers do our grunt work for us, like cheap indentured slave labor. We have regressed back to the days of the Confederacy, where hard labor brought small rewards. We should quit whining and complaining when it is us and our spoiled decadent ways that have caused the problem. If you want to enjoy low prices at the grocery store, you might want to thank the migrant workers, or pick the produce yourself.
