Democrats have plenty to pick from in primary

| May 10, 2006 9:00 PM

In his column (May 5), David Keyes states "there is absolutely no reason for anyone to pick up a Democratic ballot in the upcoming primary." His reasoning is "that there are no local Democratic primaries, nada, zip. There are, though some very interesting contests shaping up on the GOP side."

Although there are no primaries for local Democrats, there are some important races at the top of the ticket, including races for the Idaho State Superintendent of Public Instruction (held by a Democrat for the last eight years), our representative to Congress (an open seat), and for lieutenant governor. Clearly, selecting the leader of public instruction, as well as candidates for the other positions is of great importance to all Idahoans, and is not "nada, zip."

Mr. Keyes informed readers "during the last general election he endorsed and predicted the final outcome in every local and state race." Is Mr. Keyes suggesting that voters should just wait for his endorsements to make their decisions or is he just bragging?

Although Mr. Keyes has an informed opinion, I hope that voters attend the forums, spend time with the candidates, read their literature, and study their voting records so they can make their own choice on whom to select, rather than letting Mr. Keyes decide for them.

Its time to change how we decide who receives our vote, and whom we elect as our local, state, and federal representatives.
