Jane Owen Haynes

| May 12, 2006 9:00 PM

Jane Owen Haynes entered into the fullness of life at her home in Sandpoint, Idaho, on May 11, 2006, surrounded by her loving family.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church in Sandpoint with the Rev. Dr. Nancy Copeland Payton officiating.

Jane was born in Norman, Okla., on March 2, 1914, the eldest daughter of Ben and Nina Owen. Her father was a football coach for the Oklahoma Sooners, and she grew up on the campus of the University of Oklahoma. Jane was an accomplished equestrian, and helped train horses for the Army ROTC. She graduated from the university with a bachelor's degree in English literature.

After graduation, Jane married Delbert "D" Haynes. They came to Idaho after World War II, and built a home in Dover, where they raised their family. They lived in Hamilton, Ohio, from 1964-1971, when they moved back to Sandpoint permanently.

Jane was born into the Presbyterian Church in Norman, where her grandfather was a charter member, and was an active member of the Sandpoint congregation. She taught Sunday school, and fixed flowers for Sunday service for more than 25 years. She was a deacon and an ordained elder. She loved her church and her church family.

She contributed much to community organizations, volunteering for The Festival at Sandpoint, and the American Cancer Society. She also donated her labor to the city, helping to plant the trees along First Avenue and Cedar Street.

Jane's passion was gardening. She created gardens wherever she lived, culminating in a beautiful flower garden overflowing into the end of South Euclid Street. She was well-known for her cooking talents, and ability to make everyone feel welcome. She was a gracious hostess. Sunday dinners at Jane's were always a special occasion, creating a strong bond for her family and many friends.

The way Jane lived her life was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. She always called herself the mother of all creation, and so many who were fortunate enough to meet her thought of her as family.

She is survived by her three sons, Joe (Hazel) Haynes of Boise, Idaho, Jim (Anne) Haynes of Sandpoint and Chuck (Sue) Haynes of Sandpoint; two sisters, Ruth Page of Schulenberg, Texas, and Dorothy Ann Bryan of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, D; sons Henry "Hank" and Ben; daughter, Nina Jane Haynes Bauer; and granddaughter Connie Haynes Conroy.

Memorial donations can be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 417 N. 4th Ave., Sandpoint, ID 83864.
