LaVerne Ruth Hughes, 91, passed away, Tuesday, May 16, 2006, in Sandpoint, Idaho.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2006, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint with Pastor Darryn Hewson of the United Methodist Church officiating.
Ruth was born on Jan. 30, 1915, in Warren, Ohio, to Joseph and Eliza Withers. She grew up and attended schools in Canton, Ohio. After high school graduation, she completed a bachelor of science degree at Mt. Union College.
Ruth married Dr. Howard Allen Hughes on May 7, 1938, in Cleveland, Ohio. The couple lived in Lancing, Mich., prior to Howard entering the U.S. Navy. He fell in love with North Idaho during his basic training at Farragut Naval Base.
After World War II, Ruth and Howard moved to Coeur d'Alene, where he established a medical practice. Ruth devoted herself to raising their family.
Ruth enjoyed traveling, including trips to Ireland, England and Germany. She also enjoyed gardening, crafts and caring for her family. She was a member of the Coeur d'Alene United Methodist Church, and local sorority group.
She is survived by her two sons, Chris (Kathy) Hughes of Oldtown, Idaho, and Joe (Fran) Hughes of Kirkland, Wash.; a daughter, Elizabeth Hughes of Tukwila, Wash.; five grandchildren Chris Hughes of Mukilteo, Wash., Alex Hughes of Priest River, Idaho, Jennifer (Michael) Henley of Priest River, Heather (Alex) Berry of Issaquah, Wash., and Michael (Megan) Hughes Issaquah; and four great-grandchildren, Parker Henley, Arisa Berry, and Lauren and Carson Hughes. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Dr. Howard A. Hughes.
