Slow down, don't drive so fast; it is winter out there after all

| November 13, 2006 8:00 PM

Yes, it snowed over the weekend. While we didn't get much snow in town — some folks got a layer of slush, while other people didn't get any — it does serve as a nice reminder that winter is on its way, skiers are chomping at the bit over the news that Schweitzer got a foot of snow over the weekend.

It's also the time of year that local law enforcement and emergency crews start seeing more accidents. Folks are in a hurry and try to drive too fast — and to paraphrase an insurance company's slogan from a few years back, meet the nicest people by accident.

What can you do to travel safely this winter?

Follow these 10 safety tips from the Idaho Transportation Department.

1. Travel smart and safe. Get updates on road and weather conditions.

2. Slow down and allow plenty of room between you and the car in front of you.

3. Allow extra time. It's better to be a little late than to put yourself or others at risk by driving too fast for conditions.

4. Buckle up. Wear your seat belt. Period.

5. Play it safe around snow plows.

6. Use caution.

7. Prepare your care.

8. Share your travel plans.

9. Keep in contact. If you have one, make sure your cell phone is charged and carry a list of emergency numbers.

10. Be prepared. Keep emergency supplies in the car — from a flashlight to a first aid kit to booster cables to energy bars or other food, it's best to be prepared for the worst.

Also, just a reminder to the folks who want to share their Thanksgiving blessings that there's a week or so left to submit your story.

Thanksgiving is just over a week away and we would love you to share your blessings with us so that we, in turn, may share them with your friends and neighbors.

Teachers, if you're so inclined, give your kids a writing assignment about their Thanksgiving blessings. Illustrations are welcome, too. (All grades are welcome to participate.)

We want to hear from moms and dads and grandmas and grandpas, too. Please mail or bring your Thanksgiving blessings by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21, to: Caroline Lobsinger, Bonner County Daily Bee, Box 159, Sandpoint, ID 83864

If you've got e-mail, send your Thanksgiving blessings to bcdailybee@cdapress.com.

In keeping with this holiday tradition, we'll publish as many of these as we possibly can. The sooner you submit your blessings, the sooner we can publish them — and the more we can get in the paper.

? Caroline Lobsinger is the managing editor of the Daily Bee.
