Changes should be with byway, not instead of
We were happy to read that "some" of Pierre Bordenave's ideas for relieving traffic congestion in Sandpoint are being considered. But — these changes need to be done in conjunction with the bypass — not instead of.
His ideas for the first year make some sense, but after that they are ridiculous. Roundabouts may work to slow traffic in residential areas, but putting them along Fifth Avenue — a major thoroughfare — will create huge problems. Can you imagine a double-trailer truck filled with logs or cattle trying to navigate through one? Let's hope this is not just another way of postponing the Bypass which the great majority of residents favor.
For anyone who thinks the Bypass will result in residents and tourists "bypassing" Sandpoint in order to shop elsewhere, that is already happening. In just the past year, Sandpoint has become less than desirable as a place to shop and eat, due to the noise and exhaust of the big trucks (who don't stop to shop) and the danger in crossing the street. Like most of our friends and acquaintances, we have started "bypassing" downtown Sandpoint in favor of shopping in Ponderay. As an added bonus, we don't get a parking ticket if we stay longer than two hours.
