Timberlake hands Cats a loss

| November 30, 2006 8:00 PM

SPIRIT LAKE — Bailey Hewitt had nine points and 11 rebounds, but a cold-shooting fourth quarter by Clark Fork was the difference as 3A Timberlake beat the Cats 38-31 in non-league action Thursday night.

The Cats scored only one point in the final quarter, a sign that fatigue had set in.

"Our girls just got tired," said Cats' coach Dexter Vogel. "We're not very deep on the bench, and they had to play the whole game. We hustled and worked hard tonight, even though we were tired."

Timberlake post Ashley Porter scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half to lead Timberlake.

"Nobody could really handle her on the block," Timberlake coach Matt Miller said.

Holli Edelblute hit 5 of 6 free throws and added seven points for Timberlake (2-3), which made 14 of 19 from the line. Clark Fork (1-3) was 4 of 10.

Despite the loss, Vogel happy with his team's play, particularly that of Hewitt, whom Vogel called their floor general.

"We moved the ball well and got good looks at the basket, they just didn't fall," said Vogel. "It's coming, if we can get a few more baskets to fall we'll be winning these close games."

Rayna Allen, Shaina Gustafson and Hewitt each had three steals to spearhead a great defensive effort. Megan Hess added seven points, Allen six and Mandy Martin five for the Cats.

Clark Fork plays the Sandpoint JV Saturday at Les Rogers Court. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
