Lake City beats Sandpoint

| September 5, 2006 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE — Evan Palo scored the go-ahead goal in the 52nd minute and Lake City edged Sandpoint 2-1 in Inland Empire League play Tuesday at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

It was the first time Lake City's seniors had beaten the Sandpoint varsity.

"My kids came in and played their tails off today," Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. "We gave up a goal early and the kids came right back. Sometimes a goal like that can break a team's back."

Sandpoint (1-4-2 IEL, 1-2-2) took the lead in the first 90 seconds on a goal by Daniel Anderson. But some three minutes later, Lake City (5-0, 2-0) responded on Tim Schreiber's goal off a corner kick.

Early in the second half, Brett Lawson's long throw-in sailed over several players and in front of the goal to Palo, who booted it into the corner of the net off the short hop.

"Sandpoint's really injury riddled right now, so that's a big difference," Beadell said. "But they've been battling. Still, Sandpoint, it doesn't matter. The kids he (Sandpoint coach Randy Thoreson) has aren't going to back down because they're missing a few kids. They stepped up and played."

Sandpoint travels to Boise for a doubleheader Saturday against Centennial and Timberline.

First half — 1, Spt, Daniel Anderson 1:26. 2, LC, Tim Schreiber (Jake Williamson), 4:44. Second half — 3, LC, Evan Palo (Brett Lawson), 51:40.

Shots on goal — Spt 5, LC 7.

Saves — Spt, Ryan Williams 3; LC, Scott Klein 4.

SANDPOINT — A torrid early scoring binge by Lake City was the difference at the Timberwolves beat host Sandpoint 3-2 Tuesday afternoon in IEL action at Centennial Field.

The Timberwolves (2-0-2, 2-0) got goals from Kaitlin McDonald, Ciara Kremer and Melissa Bagan in the first 20 minutes of the game to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

"Lake City is a good team with fast forwards," said Bulldogs' coach Adam Tajan. "You need to take care of things defensively or they'll take advantage of it. They earned their goals. You can't spot someone three goals and hope to get a W."

Sandpoint (3-2-1, 1-2-1) was able to come back and make a game of it as goals by Brittany Oakley and Sadie Vogel cut the lead to 3-2 early in the second half. Both goalies were solid in the net as the offenses would cool off down the stretch.

"Sandpoint is always well coached, maybe on another day they can beat us," said Lake City coach Matt Ruchti. "We got a good lead and were able to hang on to it."

Sandpoint hosts Gonzaga Prep today at 6:30 p.m. at War Memorial Field.
