Traffic mess causing plenty of aggravation

| September 11, 2006 9:00 PM

I was wondering if you could sue the city of Sandpoint for health-related problems driving in the absolute idiotic way the traffic is handled in and around town, because it makes my blood boil. I recently followed someone out of town, who stopped at literally every intersection (including BP gas station) to let several cars into the mix, and although admirable, what it did was cause a bottleneck that stopped traffic all the way from the Long Bridge up past Safeway.

People don't understand that keeping traffic moving enables everyone to get where they are going. Yes, leave intersections open when stopping for lights and such, but you don't have to stop at every intersection.

And then there is the stupid idea of roundabouts. Get real, it works in Europe, but it wouldn't work here. They know how to drive, they get over when they are slower than the traffic flow (think Sagle) and they don't drive big SUVs and logging/cattle trucks. We need a bypass and every time there is an idea, some jerk has an objection.

We need to make a decision as to the best way to divert traffic that doesn't want to go through town and allow the ones who do to enjoy it without dodging the smelly cattle trucks. And for those who feel it would make their new condos noisier, you live on the railroad tracks for crying out loud.

With the price of gas, you shouldn't have to sit through the stop light on Fifth and Cedar more than once, because the selfish people who try to race through the light and then want to get over and stop traffic for the ones who patiently wait in the correct lane, what a mess.

Whoever designed our "Champs Elysee" obviously didn't have to drive that way every day. And the way the traffic backs up all the way across the Long Bridge coming into town, what a joke. It used to be just when there were events in town, but now it's gotten to be daily. We have to do something now, before I either have a heart attack dealing with drivers who either don't know the area or just don't know how to drive period, or there is an avoidable incident of road rage.
