| September 14, 2006 9:00 PM

CLARK FORK — Junior Megan Hess had eight kills and 33 digs as the Wampus Cats dropped an exciting NSL match to Wallace Thursday night in Clark Fork.

Wallace seemed surprised at how tough the Cats played them in winning 19-25, 25-12, 25-27, 25-17 and 15-9. Kara Hayman led the Miners with 10 digs and 32 assists, and Krista Williams added six aces and three blocks.

Clark Fork (4-4) continues to improve each game as Bailey Hewitt had six aces and 31 digs, and Rayna Allen and Mo Becker added some firepower from the service line, tallying 4 aces each.

"They're starting to gel and it's exciting to see," said coach Lisa Allen. "This one doesn't feel like a loss to me because of how well we played."

? Sandpoint girls drop Lewis and Clark

SPOKANE — Sandpoint knocked of Lewis and Clark of Spokane on Thursday, winning the non-league girls soccer match 2-2 (4-1 in a shootout).

Becca Stone had two goals, one off a nice nicely played through ball by Brittany Clawson, and the second, in the 76th minute off another nice through ball by Brittany Oakley.

Mallory Yates, Becca Stone, Brittany Oakley and Sandy Whalen each hit their PK's in the shootout. Bulldogs' coach Adam Tajan singled out the play of sophomore forward Liz Stone.

"She did a really good job in the back," he said. "She was super physical and won a lot of balls in the air. She stepped up and sort of took charge.

Sandpoint plays at GSL power Mead on Saturday.

? Bulldogs to tangle with No. 1 team in state

Sandpoint heads south today to take on Lake City, the No. 1 team in the state, in Inland Empire League action.

Jake Semones will get the start at quarterback for the injured Ryan Armbruster, who is expected to miss a week with an injured hand. Mat Lawrence will also see some action behind center.

Despite his team being 0-3, head coach Mike Mitchell doesn't see any quit in his team as they continue to get used to his system.

"I told them to treat it like an opportunity; a lot of kids never get the opportunity to play the No. 1 team in the state, he said. "Play reckless, don't be afraid, and play hard, good football. That's how you get better at this game."

Kickoff is at Lake City at 7 p.m., AM 1400 will carry the game.

? Clark Fork and Wallace to do battle

Clark Fork entertains Wallace tonight at 7 p.m. in Clark Fork.

Cats' coach Brian Arthun expects a tough game for more reasons than one. His son is one of the top players at Wallace.

"It's hard, I always want the kid to do well," said Arthun. "Coaching against him makes me want to win more."

The Wampus Cats will look to run their win streak to three games.
