What's your excuse for not voting in election?

| September 18, 2006 9:00 PM

"Wow" it happened again here in Bonner County. We just had an election that we would have considered where millions of dollars would have been spent.

Do we realize the impact that would have had? That in itself did not surprise me. What did was the amount of voter turnout.

It appears that a whopping 21 percent of our registered voters took the time to turn out and vote. I'm not writing about how the vote went — it's about the apathy we seem to have about voting in non-presidential races here in Bonner County that we should be ashamed of.

Our soldiers are dying for that in foreign lands, just for the chance to do what we appear to take for granted. I'm a senior citizen now and my father served in World War II and would be ashamed that 79 percent of you stayed home.

I can remember whatever the voting was about when I was a kid, my entire neighborhood would turn out to cast their vote.

We thought we had a duty to all those people who gave their lives for that right. I would hope that people would take voting to heart next time. It doesn't matter who you vote for that may be running for in office, or you do or don't want to spend money on a project, just get off your "you know what" and go vote your choice.

Too many people died or are dying right now for you to just take your freedoms for granted. Maybe sooner than later someone might come in and take that away from you. "Think about it."
