Sommerfield's 81 leads Sandpoint golf team

| April 10, 2007 9:00 PM

LEWISTON — Lake City senior Matt Kelso knuckled down and stayed the course through a demanding wind for a 2-over-par 73 to finish as the medalist at the Moscow Invitational at Bryden Canyon Golf Course.

Dan Sommerfield carded an 81, his best round of the season for the Bulldogs, who finished fifth out of 10 teams. Wyatt Pearson shot an 85 as the field had to battle some difficult conditions for golf.

"It was a very difficult day for everybody," said Sandpoint coach Mike Keough. "The wind was blowing really hard and it was cold."

Sandpoint is at Coeur d'Alene on Thursday.

? Ferguson sizzles at the plate as Bulldogs softball team falls to Prarie

LEWISTON — Kim Ferguson had four hits, including a triple and a home run over the left center field wall, and knocked in five runs to lead Sandpoint (0-7) as they lost both ends of a doubleheader to Prarie High School of Cottonwood.

Sandpoint committed 10 errors in the two games, which proved too much to overcome. They had one more hit that Prarie in the doubleheader, but the errors resulted in an 8-2 defeat in the first game, and a 12-11 heartbreaker in the second.

Head coach Derek Dickinson said Ferguson's approach at the plate is the approach he wants all of his hitters to take.

"She was attacking the ball all day," said Dickinson of his powerful third baseman. "She set the tone for us; she was relaxed and attacking the ball with her hands."

Molly Givens, Rachel Hammack and Sara Murphy all pitched for the Bulldogs.

Sandpoint hosts Coeur d'Alene on Friday.
