Bulldogs pick up win in softball

KELLOGG — Freshman hurler Molly Givens picked up both victories, Sara Murphy and Macaela Brady each had five RBI games, and the Sandpoint Bulldogs earned their first two wins of the season by outlasting Kellogg 17-2 and 17-15 in non-league action Monday in Kellogg.

Lindsay Owens collected six hits on the day, Sara Murphy five, including three doubles, and Kim Guercio, Brinda Bunn and Stephanie Ferguson had four apiece as the Bulldog bats came to life. Eight different Bulldogs laced extra base hits, a number any coach would be thrilled with.

"We got the monkey off the bats," chuckled Bulldogs' coach Derek Dickinson, whose team banged out 34 hits on the day. "They were relaxed, aggressive, and hit line drives all game long."

In the opener, Sandpoint would score in each inning, capped by 11 runs combined in the fourth and sixth inning to pull away from the Wildcats. Givens threw a complete game, four-hit gem.

The afternoon's second game was a barn-burner as the Bulldogs outlasted the Wildcats to earn the sweep.

Kellogg opened the bottom of the first inning with two runs on a double by Lauren Stewart to take an early lead. Sandpoint would rally in the top of second with eight runs to take a 8-2 lead. Kellogg countered with six runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at 8-8.

Sandpoint would get the lead back with a four-run third inning with a two-run double by Macaela Brady. The Bulldogs led 16-11 until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Wildcats would begin to claw back into the game.

Sandpoint hosts Lake City on Thursday.
