Few answers available in senseless campus tragedy

| April 16, 2007 9:00 PM

When does an event become so shocking it rises to the level of unbelievable?

On Monday, 32 people were killed after a gunman went on a two-hour rampage at Virginia Tech. More than 26 people were treated at three area hospitals for gunshot wounds and other injuries.

Stunning and sickening.

Because the gunman killed himself, nobody will really know what caused him to snap so violently.

Why does something like this happen? More importantly, what can be done to stop a massacre before it starts?

This was the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history.

It seems there is no end to senseless violence and there are few answers to these important questions.

As authorities sort out motives and assess how emergency procedures either worked or failed, we should all take note.

As frightening as this is, it could happen here.

A day after this tragedy we must mourn the loss of life but at the same time prepare — unfortunately, the next deadliest shooting rampage ever could be just around the corner.
