Media's actions encourage the senseless violence

| April 23, 2007 9:00 PM

I wish that the media would stop saying things like "deadliest shooting rampage in history". Here is part what .57 seconds on Google turned up.

? Aug. 1, 1832. Battle of Bad Axe, 300 Indian men, women and children are slaughtered in Wisconsin by white soldiers.

? Spring 1850. Bloody Island Massacre. The murder of up to 200 Pomo people in California by Nathaniel Lyon and his U. S. Army detachment.

? Aug. 17, 1850. Kaibai Creek Massacre. Forty-two Winnemem Wintu men, women and children are killed by white settlers at Kaibai Creek, CA.

? Feb. 26, 1860. Gunther Island Massacre. At least 100 Wiyot Indians are slaughtered by white settlers in Humboldt County, Calif.

? Jan. 29, 1863. Bear River Massacre. Col. Patrick Connor leads a regiment killing at least 200 Indian men, women and children near Preston, Idaho.

? Nov. 29, 1864. Sand Creek Massacre. Militiamen slaughter at least 160 Cheyenne Indians at Sand Creek, Colo.

? Jan. 23, 1870. Marias Massacre White Americans slaughter 173 Piegans, mainly women, children and the elderly.

? Dec. 29, 1890. Wounded Knee Massacre. Around 300 Sioux men, women and children are massacred by US soldiers at Wounded Knee, S.D.

A few milliseconds of research on the part of the media might just help contain another frenzy.
