Clark Fork defeats Sandpoint in tennis
SANDPOINT — Clark Fork showed why they will be a force to be reckoned with at the state tournament this year, beating Sandpoint 5-1 in non-league tennis action Tuesday at Travers Park. For depth purposes, only six matches were played, instead of the customary 12 varsity matches per meet.
Frederico Moreira and Dustin Pierce had a battle at No. 1 boys singles, splitting sets before Moreira won a 7-2 tie-breaker in lieu of a third set.
Clark Fork's Rayna Allen beat Abby Helander in straight sets in singles, then team with Moreira to give the Sandpoint mixed doubles team of Adam Durfee and Piper Wahlin their first loss of the season.
The Cats' Thomas McMahon also won a singles and doubles match, teaming with Mike Martin to beat Justin Vaughn and Ryan Williams 8-5 in a pro set. Cats' co-coach Lisa Allen believes the duo has a shot to join her daughter Rayna as state champions.
"I feel like they can win state," she said. "They have really good teamwork and are very consistent."
Emma Millar and Ashley Warrer beat Amy Gannon and Chelsea Macumber in three sets, providing the only Bulldog win and giving the pair a big boost of confidence.
"Glad to see those two get a win and get them feeling more positive about their games," said Sandpoint coach Jane Rockwell. "If those two girls can get together, they have a chance to go to state."
