Clark Fork races to NSL meet win

SILVERTON — Leo Haase and Adam Denham raced to a rare dead heat in the 1,600 meters Tuesday afternoon at the Sather Field Athletic Complex, leading the Clark Fork boys' track team to a first place finish at a North Star League meet in Silverton.

Denham, who also won the 3,200 meters and Haase don't go head to head very often, but when they do, their coach says it's 50/50 who will win.

"Leo just left a little gap on the inside, and Adam was able to slip inside and beat him at the tape," said Cats' coach Rich Hannah of the race, where the pair posted identical 5:07.35 times.

Matt Belville won the 300 hurdles, and finished second in the triple jump, as the Clark Fork boys simply posted solid finishes in many of the events to take the team title.

"Most of the kids run four events and do as much as they can," said Hannah of the boys team. "We don't really have any burners, but they're all putting points in."

Hannah said most of his athletes are setting personal bests in every meet, sign of steady improvement.

Bailey Hewitt won the 300 and 100 meter hurdles, and finished second in the 200, and Moranda Becker finished second in the triple jump for the girls' team, which has only four members. Hewitt ran a 16.1 in the 100 hurdles, improving upon her school record. Hannah believes Hewitt could qualify for state this year in four events.

Clark Fork is at Timberlake on Friday.
