Disaster points to our own vulnerability

| August 8, 2007 9:00 PM

The collapse of the bridge in Minneapolis points up the vulnerability to Sandpoint of depending on only one bridge across Lake Pend Oreille. The ever-increasing heavy traffic across the Long Bridge increases the probability of a similar catastrophe. Instead of investing millions of dollars in an ineffective Sand Creek bypass, which will do nothing to alleviate the bridge traffic problem, the effort should go toward construction of the western route, which could provide another bridge for heavy truck traffic as well as an alternative route in the event of an accident on the Long Bridge. It is a simple matter of safety and security.
