Council should follow the will of the people

| August 20, 2007 9:00 PM

Mayor Miller was quite upset at the vote by the council to not accept the free land from ITD. One member's excuse for voting 'no' was he thought voters were ignorant as to where we want the bypass.

It is my understanding that politicians such as council members are elected to implement the will of those who elected them and not insult us by telling us that we, the voting public, do not know where we want the bypass.

In addition, if I were to go to a meeting unprepared to perform my job (voting intelligently) and voted anyway, I would be censured for negligence. Remember Councilman Lockwood, it is an election year.

As for the reason not to build the bypass where we want it, the Sand Creek mud flats that we residents know so well will be reduced in size, which will jeopardize the breeding grounds of the northern Idaho blood sucking mosquito — I'm sure, a protected species.

Another reason not to build it is that pig truck drivers and motor home jockeys love to roam Sandpoint's streets looking for a place to park so they can buy a book to read when stuck in traffic on the Long Bridge.

People — Sandpoint is a destination town which means that when a traveler plans a trip they have all ready planned to stop here. You don't hear travelers say, "Let's stop in Athol for lunch" — do you? Our businesses will not lose sales due to a bypass. If you are a concerned businessman, put in some RV parking on the property that the council voted not to accept.
