Sandpoint thrashes Lewiston in soccer

| August 24, 2007 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — The Clark Fork contingent wasted little time making their presence known, scoring the first six goals of the game as Sandpoint thrashed Lewiston 7-0 in season opening action Friday at Centennial Field.

Bailey Hewitt scored the first three goals of the game, each assisted by Brittany Oakley, and Shaina Gustafson scored the next two goals as Sandpoint built a commanding 5-0 halftime lead. Hewitt would score her fourth goal of the game in the second half, and head coach Adam Tajan wasn't all that surprised to see the goal barrage.

"She's going to be a force, it's great she's got an opportunity to play," said Tajan of Hewitt, who along with Gustafson are playing with Sandpoint in soccer this season despite attending Clark Fork High School, which doesn't have a soccer team. "She's been tearing it up in practice, giving our backs all they can handle, which will only make us better."

Tajan also liked how tenacious Gustafson played, admitting he was surprised more by her goals. Kelsey Windju pitched a shutout in her first game in goal, and the back four of Sandpoint (1-0, 1-0) was typically stingy as they clicked in all facets of the game.

Sandpoint plays at Lakeland on Tuesday.

LEWISTON — Sandpoint played much faster and put out a better all-around team effort in dispatching Lewiston 7-0 in an IEL opener for both teams Friday in Lewiston.

Spencer Swerin had two goals and Anders Nostdahl had a goal and two assists as a host of Bulldogs got into the scoring mix. Sandpoint (1-1, 1-0) out-shot Lewiston by a commanding 40-2 margin.

"The speed of play was tremendously improved," said coach Randy Thoreson, noting the opening loss to Coeur d'Alene featured far too much dribbling. "We played a lot of one and two-touch soccer and it opened up a lot of avenues."
