SHS opening loss filled with good, bad

| August 24, 2007 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE — Typical of a season opener, Sandpoint coach Randy Thoreson said he saw some good and some bad things as Coeur d'Alene blanked Sandpoint 2-0 in a nonleague opener Wednesday night in Coeur d'Alene.

"It wasn't a league game, but still a rivalry and a great chance to see in a game situation where we need to put time in and where we were successful," said Thoreson. "Tanner French and Gunnar Paulsen played very well in the back, but we need to sort out some of our forward runs."

Viking sophomore Jordon Eborall scored off a Forrest Walker assist in the 65th minute, and Walker added an insurance goal in the 71st minute with an assist from Cameron Vandall and Coeur d'Alene. Both Sandpoint goalkeeper Shawnn Carlson and Coeur d'Alene keeper Marc Hilbert finished with five saves apiece.

"It's a good start," Viking coach Eric Louis said. "We both saw what we wanted to see on the field. Coeur d'Alene vs. Sandpoint, that's just tough soccer. Both squads were ready for a good game."
