Bulldogs girls blank Moscow 5-0

| August 30, 2007 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — The two Brittanys — Clawson and Oakley — each scored two goals and Bailey Hewitt added a goal and an assist as Sandpoint blanked visiting Moscow 5-0 Thursday afternoon in Inland Empire League girls soccer action at Centennial Field.

The Bulldogs (3-0, 3-0) posted their second shutout in three games, largely on the strength of an experienced back four and the goal keeping of newcomer Kelsey Windju.

"She's gaining confidence," said coach Adam Tajan of Windju. "She's a super competitive kid, which is something we've missed in goal keepers past."

Tajan liked how patient his team was with possession when they got near the goal, a trait they'll need to master as teams will pack it in defensively to try and limit the Bulldogs' ample firepower.

Sandpoint plays at Eisenhower tomorrow at 4 p.m.

First half — 1, Spt, Bailey Hewitt (penalty kick) 3:44. 2, Spt, Brittany Oakley (unassisted) 10:50. 3, Spt, Oakley (Hewitt) 29:40. 4, Spt, Brittany Clawson (unassisted) 36:20. Second half — 5, Spt, Clawson (Oakley) 43:00.

Sandpoint boys down Moscow 3-1

MOSCOW — Tanner Williams, Spencer Swerin and Anders Nostdahl each scored a goal as Sandpoint defeated 4A rival Moscow in IEL action Thursday in hot and humid Moscow.

Moscow got on the board early before Sandpoint (3-1, 3-0) scored three unanswered goals, despite playing most of the second half down a player as Alex Crossingham received a red card.

"We showed a lot of heart today, especially in the second half," said Sandpoint head coach Randy Thoreson. "It was a great win for us, especially down here."

Sandpoint heads to Coeur d'Alene on Saturday, with a chance to avenge their only loss of the year. Unlike their first meeting, this one count in IEL standings.
