Bulldogs survive tight volleyball match
MOSCOW — Koko James had a big night, and Sandpoint survived a surprisingly close and dramatic five game match Thursday night in a season opening 25-18, 22-25, 25-14, 25-27 and 24-22 win over host Moscow at the Bear Den.
James finished with 13 kills, eight of which came in the pivotal fifth game as both teams struggled to secure the win by two deciding game. James also added 25 digs, 32 set assists and three blocks in a performance head coach Karen Alsager called "out of this world."
Sandpoint (1-0, 1-0) was a bit surprised at how tough 4A rival Moscow played, and had to contend with nearly 70 high school boys screaming at them in the especially intimidating environment for high school volleyball.
"We knew they'd play well, but we didn't anticipate we'd have such a tough opener," said Alsager, calling the close game good for her team. "We still need to be disciplined and we have to earn it every time."
Piper Wahlin led the Bulldogs with 17 kills, Abby Helander with 36 digs and Linnia Hawkins with five service aces. The win should pay dividends later in the season when determining who hosts the 4A district tournament.
Sandpoint plays at Coeur d'Alene next Thursday before leaving the following day for the Walla Walla Tournament.
