Bulldogs upend Mt. Baker in non-league play

| December 21, 2007 8:00 PM

CRANBROOK, B.C. — Plying under the international rules in Canada and with 10 minute quarters, the Bulldogs got to run and gun like an NBA team, upending Mt. Baker 95-85 in frenetic non-league boys basketball action Thursday night in Cranbrook, B.C.

Ryan Armbruster exploded for a Sandpoint season-high 32 points to lead the Bulldogs (3-4), who were 15-46 from beyond the arc, and who posted a gaudy 28 team assists. Tanner French scored eight points while dishing out 12 assists, and David Duarte cleaned up on the glass with 15 rebounds.

"It was a bizarre atmosphere. Their officials are getting used to the new international format, which created an NBA style of game," explained Sandpoint coach Lance Bruce of the high-scoring shootout. "They ran a 1-2-2 and collapsed in the middle, which left our shooters open for a parade of 3-pointers."

Talon Jones scored 32 to lead Mt. Baker. Bruce called Jones a superb athlete with great hops and his coach said he has multiple full ride offers from schools in Canada. The Bulldogs ran a box-in-one defense on Jones in the second half while holding him to 10 points.

Alex Crossingham scored 18, Bryce Olin 12 and Spencer Swerin 10 to account for the other double-digit scorers. Sandpoint employed a full-court press in the second quarter, leading to a 36-17 scoring edge and essentially putting the game away.

Sandpoint hosts Moses Lake on Dec. 29.

? DeAragon wins girls wrestling tournament

MOSES LAKE — Sandpoint sophomore wrestler Anneliese DeAragon pinned both of her opponents to win the 145 pound bracket as more than 70 girls competed in seven different weight classes at a tournament Friday in Moses Lake, Washington.

DeAragon received a bye in the first round, then pinned Jamie Randle, of Sedro-Woolley High School, in 1:03 to win her second round match. In the finals, DeAragon pinned Chelsea Eakins, of Washougal High School, in 2:47 to win the championship.

"I was very happy with the way she wrestled, she was real explosive," said Bulldogs coach Kirk Hartzell, who accompanied DeAragon to the tournament. "She outclassed the field of girls. Clearly she has a skill set that a lot of girls don't have."
