Sandpoint, Lakeland battling for supremacy

| February 8, 2007 8:00 PM

SANDPOINT — As wrestling duals in North Idaho go, Friday night's battle between Sandpoint and host Lakeland is about as good as it gets.

More than just North Idaho supremacy is at stake. The dual is a prelude to districts and state, where the two teams will face each other again. Each team has a realistic shot at a 4A state title, and the results of Friday night's showdown could subsequently affect future matches.

"I expect both programs will be juggling their line ups, looking for the best possible match up, especially in terms of securing bonus points," said Bulldogs' coach Mike Randles, who expects a bit of a chess match. "Heading into districts, where it is really a two-team race, the match has the potential to impact not only that tournament, but definitely has the potential to shake up a few weight classes at the state level. Much of that, however, will depend on who matches up with whom."

The dual will be loaded with state-caliber wrestlers, with as many as 14 Idaho-ranked wrestlers taking the mat. Sandpoint is ranked No. 1 in the statewide power rankings, with Lakeland No. 4. Sandpoint is the top 4A ranked tournament team, with Lakeland third. Alas, this is a dual, not a tournament, and Lakeland is the No. 3 ranked 4A dual team, and Sandpoint is No. 8.

"Lakeland is a solid tournament team, but they're a very solid dual team as evidenced by River City Duals," said Randles of the Hawks. "In terms of duals, they may have a slight advantage, but in that environment things can quickly change."

The two teams will be vying for district, as well as state titles in the next two weeks. Randles expects a very vocal senior night crowd, and is hoping for as much Sandpoint support at Lakeland as possible. The JV matches start at 5 p.m., with varsity to follow (around 7 p.m.).
