Bulldogs sign to play in Frontier Conference
SANDPOINT — Four Sandpoint Bulldogs have now signed scholarships to play football in the NAIA's Frontier Conference of Montana next season.
Will Andrews is the starting punter, and hopes to make it as a linebacker at Montana State Northern, in Havre. The 6-foot-1, 210 pounder said the team felt like a family when he visited.
"I'm excited," said Andrews. "See if I can compete up there."
Bulldogs' coach Mike Mitchell believes Andrews can lead the nation in punting if he merely stays at his current average, a whopping 40.6 yards per punt.
Austin Jones and K. C. Abey are both heading to the University of Western Montana in Dillon. The 6-foot, 265 pound Jones will play on both lines, and fulfilled a long-time goal to play in college.
"It's been my goal since I started playing flag football," said Jones. "What I've wanted to do my whole life. I've been working my butt off for it."
Abey, at 6-foot-1, 270 pounds, will fill a big need for Western, who are in dire need of help on the offensive line.
"He's a good football player," says Mitchell of Abey. "He'll get some good coaching over there."
Those three will join teammate Kurt Stoll, who just signed a scholarship with Frontier power Carroll College. They will face off against each other twice a season.
"I can't wait," said Jones. "In a couple of years we'll start hitting Kurt instead of blocking for him."
Mitchell believes it's a perfect fit for all four.
"Great level for them," he said. "They'll go up there and succeed."
