Schools don't teach what students need to know

| February 14, 2007 8:00 PM

Well, it's levy time again. I was reading the Bee today and the article on the levy mentioned "kindergarten intervention" in at around $200,000. What is this! We have to send kids 5 years old to rehab now?

The article mentioned that since enrollment is down they have less funds from the state they have to ask for more from the property owners.

What about consolidating some schools? What about cutting some administrators? When I was in school we had up to 35 kids in a classroom. The teachers then could handle it very well. How about teaching reading, writing and arithmetic and forget the self esteem. That's the purview of the parents and life experience.

Personally I have not met very many intelligent products from our modern school system. There are many exceptions but for the most part our kids are not being taught what is needed for life. Simple things like reading an analog clock with no numbers or how to count back change without the aid of a computer. If schools had to rely on stockholders to fund them they'd be belly up.
