Commission's display was

'embarrassing, disgraceful'

On Jan. 8, our new county officials, including two new commissioners, were sworn in. I attended this occasion. At the end of the swearing in ceremony, it was time for the three commissioners to appoint a chairman. This nomination is traditionally (and rightfully) given to the senior commissioner. After two long uncomfortable moments of silence from all three, our county clerk once again asked for a nomination for the chair position.

Newly-elected commissioner Todd Crossett then spoke up and nominated newly-elected commissioner Lewis Rich. It was clear that Mr. Crossett and Mr. Rich had already discussed this between them. After lengthy discussion and amendments to the nomination, Mr. Rich was appointed the chair.

Several of us who attended were stunned, to say the least. Not just at this appointment but the manner with which it occurred was very sad indeed. It appears that the commissioners' meetings and office will now be the Lewis Rich (and his Bud Mueller supporters) agenda.

The display on Jan. 8 was scary, embarrassing and disgraceful. I can only hope and pray that they show better judgment (and some team work) when all three actually get down to the business of running our county.
