| January 16, 2007 8:00 PM

Stanley (Slim) Sperling Stender, 83, passed away Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at Tri-State Memorial Hospital in Clarkston, Wash.

Stan was born Sept. 14, 1923, at Spokane. He was raised in the Clark Fork, Idaho, area. He graduated from Clark Fork High School in 1942, and later married his wife, of 54 years, Lois (Lovie) Anderson. They remained in Clark Fork to raise their four children.

Stan loved the outdoors and spent most of his life logging the Idaho Panhandle. He later retired from the American Borate mine in Death Valley, Nev., and moved to the Lewis-Clark Valley, where he got great enjoyment following the LCSC Warriors.

Slim, as he was known to many, was a man of few words but had great wit and wisdom. He grew up playing baseball and passed his love of the game on to many youngsters. He started the Little League program in Superior, Mont., and Clark Fork, during the mid-60s, and was proud of all his hard-hitting "Outlaws."

He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushrooming, berry picking, and was in constant search for the perfect shake bolt. Later in years, his fishing continued on the Clearwater River and he could always be found on the sidelines of a baseball, basketball or soccer game following the activities of his grand children. He loved a spirited round of double deck pinochle, and was quick to accept a cribbage challenge.

He is survived by his brother, Duffy Stender and wife Veneita of North Bend, Ore.; his wife, Lovie of Clarkston; children, Roxanna Lowther and husband Bob of Sandpoint, Idaho, Pamela Flink of Missoula Mont., Susie Quarve and husband Grant of Spokane, Scott Stender of Lewiston; and six grandchildren, Rebecca Morrow and husband Scott, Marcus and Chase Lowther, Stephen, Chelsey, and Evan Flink.

He will be greatly missed by all of them and his large extended family.

A celebration of Stan's life will take place in the Clark Fork area over Memorial Day weekend.
