Communication workshop may help on milfoil issue

| January 22, 2007 8:00 PM

There are many things wrong in this world. One of them is our apparent inability as humans to respect, listen to, even love people we strongly disagree with. It's a fault, everyone has it. It's decidedly unchristian, decidedly not nice. This was really underlined for me during the last county commissioners race.

It's being underlined again with another issue, our county's treatment of milfoil. Whew, this a hot topic and I have firm beliefs, yes I do, but I want to be listened to and I want to listen to others.

Granted, the powers-that-be can just run right over my opinions, so can that thing called majority rules. But where is that going to get us? As is now being reflected in D.C., power always changes hands. If we keep ignoring, abusing, vilifying those we don't agree with, we will tit for tat each other into extinction and make a huge mess of it on the way out. That's not what I want for my kids, your kids neither.

A friend told me there is going to be a workshop on nonviolent communication at the Gardenia Center on Jan. 27 from 3-6 p.m. From what I've heard, this might be useful for the milfoil task force and all those involved with making these decisions. Not to be unbalanced, all you hot headed, tree hugging environmentalists and all you it's a free country boaters and jet skiers might go, too. Might do us all some good.
