Sand Creek route violates federal Clean Water Act

| July 11, 2007 9:00 PM

There are many who can identify with Arnold Schwarzenegger becoming our next president. Fiscally conservative, socially moderate, and capable of uniting both side of the aisle — he is perhaps the ultimate Republi-crat. His action hero-like qualities convey an image of strength in our global war on terror. Hasta la vista al-Qaida!

Many can also identify with the Sand Creek alignment of the byway. A nearly straight line between the two service points, getting through truck traffic out of downtown, making use of the railroad transportation corridor; these are the qualities most often cited by the byway supporters.

The problem is neither of these two events can happen without an act of Congress. We are no more likely to get it the Clean Water Act repealed then we are to get a constitutional amendment allowing a foreign born president. The Clean Water Act is likely to remain untouchable.

Those that truly desire transportation improvements in North Idaho understand that the "candidate" must be electable in order to get the job done. The Sand Creek alignment of the byway project is the ultimate "Arnie Alignment" — while it may feel good for many, it simply can't happen without a significant change in federal laws; a change unlikely to happen in our lifetime.

It is time to insist that ITD complete the Corps mandated alternatives analysis and put forth some "electable" alignments so they can finally deliver on their responsibility to resolve Sandpoint's traffic gridlock. Time's a wastin'.
