Join march to protest the use of herbicides
Please join me, and many others, to envision sustainable solutions for our lake on Saturday, July 21, at Farmin Park in Sandpoint. Come at 1 p.m. to help make signs. Join the march through downtown at 2 p.m.
This demonstration is to show support for the Bonner County commissioners and the Aquatic Invasive Species Task Force. We applaud their decision to include sustainable solutions such as bio-controls, revegetation, bottom barriers and hand pulling in their grant request to the state for this year's Eurasian watermilfoil control plan.
We are disappointed that bio-controls and revegetation were not funded by the state this year. Our peaceful demonstration is planned to let state officials and legislators know that we want these components included in future years. We need assurance that sustainable, long-term solutions to weed management are used. We request that the term "eradication" be removed from the legislative language tied to state funds.
On Saturday, we will celebrate the creation of herbicide-free swim zones at City Beach, the Mudhole and Bonner Park West in Priest River, the Riley Creek Recreation Area in Laclede and Sam Owen Campground in Hope.
