Explosives spark Friday blaze

| July 27, 2007 9:00 PM

Firefighting crews from the Idaho Department of Lands, US Forest Service and Sagle on Friday afternoon responded to a fire five miles west of Round Lake on the Dufort Road.

The fire, which was apparently caused by explosives being used for road construction, occurred at 2 p.m.

Seventeen firefighters, one helicopter and two planes dropping retardant kept the blaze to less than an acre in a sparcely populated area. Crews were mopping up Friday night.

Paul Ward, incident commander for the USFS, said conditions were extremely dry but that cooperation between the agencies kept the fire from taking off.

The fire is under investigation.

Deterioriating fire conditions will probably force more restrictions in the woods by next week, Ward said.
