Aggressive attack on weed is right approach

| June 11, 2007 9:00 PM

We reside in the Kootenai Bay area of Lake Pend Oreille and strongly support the use of herbicide treatment in our bay and also for all other Eurasian milfoil infested areas.

The Eurasian milfoil in Lake Pend Oreille is rampant and, if it is not treated very aggressively, it will in a very short time, destroy our lake and Sandpoint's economy along with the economy of neighboring towns. What a shame that would be when there does exist a proven means, with herbicides, to kill this Eurasian milfoil weed that can entangle and potentially drown swimmers as well as tangle water craft props and ruin motors. Eurasian milfoil was so widespread and thick that residents could not even swim around their own docks.

We thank the Bonner County commissioners for their current stand in favor of using the most aggressive approach to eradicating Eurasian milfoil, where needed. We support the use of herbicides to eradicate this killer weed from our lake.

Additionally, the earliest possible date for application of treatment this year and in future years is important for saving our lake, for the creatures living in it, for the safety and enjoyment of those using it, and for our town's economic survival, which largely depends on Lake Pend Oreille.
