Every child needs an opportunity to learn
I am responding to your article, "Teachers celebrated at Spirit of Education Awards night" which appeared in the June 12 Bee. For years I have volunteered in public schools, both in Alaska and in Idaho. Every teacher I've worked with has been devoted to their students and should receive this recognition!
Our teachers need our direct support, as do our community's children. Parents: try to find the time to read with — and converse with — your children. Encourage them. Help them organize their school activities and review their homework with them. Doing little things, like looking up words in the dictionary, can make a significant difference.
Community members: vote for school levies and, if you have the time and are personable, volunteer at your neighborhood school. The kids will benefit from your knowledge, and the teachers will appreciate the extra help. You will need to undergo a background check but that shouldn't take much time or effort.
Education is the cornerstone of our society, and by availing education to all children, public schools are at the center of our democracy. Every child needs an opportunity learn.
