Sandpoint dominates own volleyball tourney
SANDPOINT — Two Sandpoint Volleyball Club teams added titles to their already impressive resumes by winning their own tournament this weekend, in dominating fashion. The Mountain to Lake Classic was held at SHS, SMS and Farmin/Stidwell Elementary both Saturday and Sunday, and drew 14 teams from the surrounding area for each division.
The U14 tournament ran Saturday with the Sandpoint team, coached by Mary Branch, never dropping a game the entire day en route to the title. They defeated top-seeded East Valley in the finals. It was their second tournament of the season, as they recently took second place at the Spokane Challenge.
The U14-2 team, coached by Amy Smith, took second place in the consolation bracket. It was a great effort for this young team.
In the U16 tournament the Sandpoint U15s, coached by Jack Dyck, also won the tournament while never dropping a game. They beat VIP 16's of Spokane in the finals. The Sandpoint U16 team, coached by Kendrea Meyer, placed 5th. The draw included teams from Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, Wenatchee, Wash., and Missoula, Mont.
The Sandpoint Volleyball Club is heading to Yakima for a major tournament March 17 and 18. They will be sending the U12 team coached by Angie Endicott, both U14 teams, as well as the U15 and U16 teams. The U15 team and U14-1 team are playing in the Open Division. They will be facing some teams from Seattle, Tacoma and Portland and will be looking to continue the legacy of faring well at big tournaments.
