Past levies have done a lot to help district's students
What has the past levy done for me as a student at Lake Pend Oreille School District?
I know that a lot of you don't want the levy to pass because you would have to pay more taxes but if you knew how much it would do for our school then maybe, just maybe, you would vote yes. It would mean a lot.
I love math and I bet a lot of other kids do, too. It was great to come to school last year and have our math journals and practice books for our Every Day Mathematics and reading skills there in class instead of waiting for them to come later in the year.
The computers were the biggest thing I think for the teachers and students in our school. The levy money for years past helped pay for 74 new computers in the computer lab, classrooms and the office, etc. No one has to share a computer in the lab like we used to or worry about them breaking down. Some kids may not have computers to work on at home, and I think they really enjoy having computers to do research for our ABC books, which we're doing right now in fifth grade. The sixth-graders are doing a PowerPoint on a career that we can look forward to next year. The computers at the lab are being used three to five hours a day. We also use them for math, science and social studies projects. I bet a lot of you saw the tower that was being put up recently for high speed Internet and to upgrade our technology.
All the fifth-graders are looking forward to our field trips. We are going on three important field trips but we need buses to do these activities. We also need buses to get students safely to and from school. So, if the levy passes, then the school district gets two new buses.
Everyone was happy about the day we had no school, but it was because the boiler broke down. Because the maintenance department had levy money, they were able to repair it and had it working for the next school day.
Well, I made myself pretty clear as a student why it would be a good idea to vote yes. It is my hope that this levy passes, for you and your children. Even if you don't have kids, the students who are being educated now are Sandpoint's future. The students' education is important and your vote is important.
Thank you.
