Drive-by shooting under investigation

| March 8, 2007 8:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Police are investigating an apparent drive-by shooting of a Jefferson Avenue apartment early Wednesday night.

Nobody was injured in the shooting, but one of the bullets ripped through the front of the home and lodged in a living room ceiling. Two women were in the room at the time, said Police Chief Mark Lockwood.

"A few inches either way and we probably would have had someone injured or killed," Lockwood said.

The incident, which happened in the 400 block of Jefferson, was reported at 6:14 p.m., according to Bonner Dispatch records.

Officers canvassed the area and talked to neighbors who distinctly heard the clap of up to three gunshots, Lockwood said. A handgun was apparently used in the shooting.

Suspect information was not released Thursday and Lockwood said investigators are running down leads. Given the circumstances, odds are that the shooting was anything but random.

"I definitely think there's some pre-meditation," he said.

? Those with information about the shooting or its perpetrators are asked to call the Sandpoint Police Department at 265-1482.
