District needs to adopt fiscal responsibility

| March 12, 2007 9:00 PM

A story concerning band and other extracurricular activities ending ran on KREM-2 news on March 5 and is resentful. Every year it's "The sky is falling."

A 40-percent increase over the last levy with declining enrollment for at least the next six to seven years? Won't this automatically reduce class sizes?

There seems to be a conflict of stories between the district and the sources I double checked with, with no motive to fabricate their "volunteered" information concerning observations of the district's generous transportation practices.

Another conflict: Requiring students to bring general classroom supplies (such as white board erasers) to school as teachers claim they have to dip into their own pockets for these items.

Any school sponsorship of golf and ski teams other than providing an empty room such a for the chess club should be left for the college level.

Part of the levy money, as I understand it, is for five new positions in the technology department? More administrative drones we'll continually have to fund with future levies as needs for cost of living and insurance goes up.

Considering the present uncertain situation with property taxes, keep basic education in mind when the district wants to be everything to everybody.

I hope this letter and those of others who are voting no won't be met with bureaucratic double talk and convoluted funding formulas that defy the average person's common sense.

Vote for fiscal responsibility and the true mission of schools — basic education.
