Levy will help students continue their success

| March 14, 2007 9:00 PM

I would like to correct some misinformation contained in recent letters to the Daily Bee.

? The proposed LPOSD supplemental levy does not include any new technology positions. It does include existing technology positions that have been a part of the supplemental levy for the last several years.

? The school district does not fund a ski team and will not fund a ski team with this levy.

? Students are often requested to bring supplies to school. These include supplies used individually by students and supplies that are for classroom use. Dry erase boards are "yesterday's" chalk boards. When I was in grade school, I remember bringing chalk to school, so it seems reasonable for students today to bring dry erase markers. Students use individual dry erase boards to do classwork, so having enough dry erase markers for an entire class is a necessity.

? A residence assessed at $400,000 and receiving a homeowners exemption will pay an additional $57/year. In January 2007, the Bonner County Assessor's office projected a 0-5 percent increase in the overall taxable value within the school district, including new construction. Also, the homeowner's exemption will increase to $89,000. To find out how much the levy will cost for your home, go to LPOSD.org. This levy is the only levy that LPOSD taxpayers will pay and it replaces the current levy which expires on June 30, 2007.

? The board of trustees does listen to constituents. The board conducted seven public workshops to develop this levy. All meetings were open to the public and public input was invited. The very clear picture that we received was that our community values its small rural schools and reasonable class sizes, curriculum development, and extra-curricular activities. The community is proud of our successes and wishes to continue the progress we have made in the past several years. This levy will provide us with the resources to continue on that path.

Please vote "yes" on March 20.
