Softball team drops opener

| March 15, 2007 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE — Bri Harbour drove in two runs to spark a six-run third inning and Lake City went on to beat Sandpoint 10-0 in five innings in Inland Empire League action Thursday.

The Timberwolves (2-0, 2-0 IEL) scored 10 runs on 14 hits. Senior Rachelle Fenenbock had the only extra base hit of the game with a double.

"It took us awhile to get started," said Lake City coach Laura Tolzmann. "Harbour's hit was key and got the ball rolling."

Kim Guercio, Stephanie Ferguson and Kyra Crabb singled for the Bulldogs (0-1, 0-1 IEL). Coach Derek Dickinson knew it would be a tough first game for the Bulldogs, who only had two practices on grass to prepare for one of the top teams in the state.

"I was pretty pleased with our pitching," said Dickinson, noting his team is working to clean up their errors early in the season. "Our pitching is coming along. We threw strikes today, walking only one batter."

Freshman Molly Givens was solid in her first-ever varsity start, as the Bulldogs' three errors led to some of the damage.

Sandpoint plays at Kellogg on Saturday at 11 a.m. Look for a Bulldogs softball season preview next week in the Daily Bee.
