Sedler knows the issues on Sand Creek byway

| March 24, 2007 9:00 PM

Peter Heraper's guest opinion (Daily Bee, March 20) complaining about NICAN's opposition to the projected bypass came ironically as the Corps of Engineers required the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) to redo much of the process because of ITD's own ineptitude. I don't know about Liz Sedler and 17 million acres of forest in Alaska that Mr. Heraper thinks has something to do with the bypass, but I do know that Liz knows the issues, technical and broad, about the bypass.

One of the Corps' requirements is that ITD revisit alternatives that it didn't allow in public hearings years ago. As for NICAN's credibility versus the "real professionals" at ITD, a former ITD bypass engineer told me that if he lived in Sandpoint, he would oppose the bypass — and the "real professionals" at the Corps of Engineers seem to have a problem with ITD. Maybe citizen activism, though often a pain in the butt, is not such a bad thing. Mr. Heraper's problem is that Liz is a knowledgeable and formidable opponent.
