Plant a row for the hungry

| March 31, 2007 9:00 PM

Last year, the Bonner County Master Gardeners introduced the community to a concept called Plant A Row for the Hungry. The program is simple, an appeal to the gardeners of the community to plant a little extra in their vegetable plots, and to donate what they cannot use themselves to the local food bank. Many times, folks end up with an unexpected garden abundance which often goes to waste. The food banks can use all of this produce, and distribute it immediately, while it is fresh and wholesome.

Last year, the community responded to the PAR challenge by donating 4,500 pounds of produce to county food banks. Emboldened by the phenomenal community generosity, the Master Gardeners have set a goal of 8,000 pounds for 2007. Every extra head of lettuce, pound of carrots, or bag of potatoes or onions donated to food banks is a welcome nutrition boost for local families.

This is a great family project, a good opportunity for kids to make a difference during the summer, a wonderful idea for church and community groups whose membership includes gardeners. Help spread the word to your friends and neighbors: Plant A Row for the Hungry in 2007! We can keep our food banks full of fresh locally grown foods. For more information, call 263-2844.
