Pair do well at PF Invitational

| May 3, 2007 9:00 PM

POST FALLS — Dan Sommerfield and Wyatt Pearson both shot their career low rounds as the Sandpoint boys golf team finished at the Post Falls Invitational on Thursday at the Prairie Falls Golf Club.

Sommerfield continues to shave strokes off his rounds, taming the course at one-over par 71, followed by Pearson's 77.

"Right now they're really focusing, this is the last match before districts and they're focused on getting to a certain level," said Bulldogs' coach Mike Keough. "A couple of them got there today, we need a little more from the other half."

Nicholas Hawkins shot 86 and Colton Story a 95 for a team score of 329, but more importantly five strokes behind Moscow, whom they'll need to beat at districts to qualify as a team for state. Moscow's Chris Williams shot a 5-under 65 to earn boys medalist honors for the boys. While Williams is arguably the top boys' player in North Idaho, Keough believes his team is stronger overall in the next four.

Coeur d'Alene's boys won their second tournament in two days, shooting a 294 to beat Lewiston by 10 strokes. Lewiston won the girls tourney with a 354, one stroke better than Coeur d'Alene, and sophomore Genna Dodge of Post Falls shot a 6-over-par 77 to earn girls medalist honors.

Michelle Stone led the Sandpoint girls with a 103, followed closely by Sandy Whalen (106), Bonnie Snow (110) and Morgan Braun (111). It was one of the more consistent team efforts of the season amid wet and windy conditions.

Sandpoint hosts Moscow and Lakeland at the 4A District 1 golf tournament Wednesday at Stoneridge Golf Club in Blanchard. Winners from both the boys and girls teams advance to state, as well as the top three individuals overall. Teams begin teeing off at 1 p.m.
