Vaughn, Williams continue hot streak in boys doubles

SANDPOINT — Sandpoint's No. 1 doubles team of Justin Vaughn and Ryan Williams downed Willie Bruno and Kyle Plue in the match of the day as Sandpoint and Coeur d'Alene played to a 6-6 tie in IEL action Monday at Travers Park.

The duo is playing their best tennis of the season, fresh off a third place finish among 46 teams in last weekend's Inland Empire tournament in Spokane. Sandpoint tennis coach Jane Rockwell said the win over Coeur d'Alene was the match of the day.

"Their third set was a dogfight," she said after each team looked strong in splitting sets. "They played smarter in the third set and made less unforced errors."

Abby Helander led a sweep in girls singles, beating Lauren Galante in straight sets, much like she's been dispatching opponents all season.

"She's not afraid to come up to the net and put the ball away," said Rockwell of Helander. "She has a strong serve and volley game that a lot of girls don't have in North Idaho."

It was the Bulldogs' final tune-up before hosting districts beginning this Friday at 10 a.m.
