Clark Fork wins district tennis tourney
LEWISTON — Clark Fork proved it's not the size of the school in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the school, winning the 3A District tennis tournament Thursday in Lewiston. Despite being a 1A school and competing against mostly 3A competition, Clark Fork finished with three individual champions and two fourth place winners.
Reigning state singles champion Rayna Allen led the way, dispatching her Clearwater Valley opponent 6-0, 6-1 in the finals.
"The Clearwater Valley coach said she plays like a cat with a mouse on the string," said Cats' coach Lisa Allen. "She knows what to do when they (opponents) come to the net; she lobs well. She kind of gets into their head, everything they do they can't seem to beat her."
Thomas McMahon and Mike Martin whipped their Deary opponents in the doubles final 6-1, 6-1. The duo are arguably the top doubles team in North Idaho, regardless of classification, and have their sights set on a state title.
"They're both pretty unbeatable at the net," said Allen.
Frederico Moreira also won in the finals, beating his Troy opponent 7-6, 6-4 to win the singles title. Moreira was able to take away his opponents huge serve, which proved to be the difference.
Freshman Chelsea Macumber had a solid tournament, beating Grangeville's No. 1 player in three sets, and finishing fourth. Allen called her very smart, quick and aggressive, with a bright tennis future.
Brittany Yates and Amy Gannon also finished fourth. The pair played well together, beading Culdesac before falling to Clearwater Valley.
