MOSCOW — There was good news and bad news for the Sandpoint boys golf team during the second day of the 4A state tournament at the University of Idaho Golf Course on Tuesday.

The good news was Sandpoint was named the 4A academic state champions for their sport, posting a robust 3.699 cumulative GPA, tops among 4A golf teams.

The bad news, if you can call a round of golf such, was that they failed to play up to their expectations, shooting a 348 — 14 strokes worse than Monday — to finish seventh as a team with a 682. Moscow, whom they beat at districts, finished fourth overall with a 652.

"We're not completely satisfied, we know we could have played better," said coach Mike Keough, who said he is encouraged about next season. "The boys winning the academic championship was the highlight of the tournament."

Wyatt Pearson followed his opening round 78 with an 83, which placed him 10th overall in the individual standings. Moscow's Chris Williams shot a scorching 66, winning medalist honors by a large margin. Pocatello shot a two-day total of 621 to win the team title by 20 strokes.

Sophomore Colton Story shot an 83, and was the only Sandpoint golfer to post a lower score on the second day of the two-day tournament.
