Tip cuts the mustard against tough stains

| May 22, 2007 9:00 PM

Last Sunday, my wife and I went to a social, and while there, a young lady sprayed mustard all over her top.

If that happens to you, don't fret and please don't wash that item until you try this.

First, scrape off and soak up as much of the mustard as possible. Mix 1 tablespoon non-bleaching, liquid dishwashing soap into 1 cup water. Blot the spot with the solution and let it soak in the material for 5 to 7 minutes.

Scrub the stain with a used toothbrush and then rinse with cool water. If the stain remains, soak the spot with vinegar and rinse with cool water. If the stain is still there, bleach with hydrogen peroxide.

For catsup or tomato sauce stains, combine the same mixture. Blot the spot and let it stand for 5 minutes. Scrub with a toothbrush and rinse with cool water. Hot water will set the stain.

If the stain remains, mix 2 tablespoons household ammonia with 1/2-cup water. Blot the stain for 3 to 5 minutes. Rinse. Repeat if necessary.

If you are allergic to the above products, don't use them.

Always test fabrics and paints before using any chemical compounds. Wear rubber gloves to protect hands and eye protection.
