CAL's philanthropy is source of inspiration
On April 18, the Community Assistance League held its annual grant award celebration. I, like so many, was in awe of the number of agencies that received supportive funds to continue their mission. CAL has 200 members of hard-working, selfless, compassionate, bright women united in their determination to make our community a better place to live and a kinder and gentler community for everyone. They raised more than $40,000 this past year. All their profits were distributed to 33 agencies for various projects and services. This did not include the funds set aside for scholarships on behalf of graduating high school seniors. All members of CAL are volunteers.
CAL asks for no recognition. They do, however, ask the recipients to "pay it forward." Bonner Partners in Care Clinic (our community health care safety net) has received much support in grant funds from CAL. Through their generosity and support, the clinic is able to offer an array of specialty programs that directly and indirectly provide health care to so many of our uninsured and underinsured patients.
CAL is not alone in its philanthropy. There are numerous others. But that week began with a terrible tragedy that rocked communities around the country. Encompassed with doubt and frustration, we asked ourselves whether tragedies have become the defining nature of our communities. CAL set the record straight that week. We, along with others, left the award celebration united to pay it forward, determined to strive for equality for all.
