Milltown reunion was lots of fun

| May 28, 2007 9:00 PM

It was fun returning to Milltown this weekend.

I wasn't around when the Sandpoint neighborhood thrived during the days of the Humbird Mill, but I got a chance to visit at Saturday's reunion which brought together some 50 Milltown residents, friends and Lincoln School alumni who told organizers they had better be invited — or else.

Speakers talked about the neighborhood and who lived where, and they talked about Lincoln School and teachers back in the day. But the neighborhood really came to life when the stories came out.

There were the stories of a former newspaper boy, who recalled delivering the paper in Milltown and trying to ride his bike past a dog determined not to let him past.

There were the stories of a young girl playing in the field and chasing her doll buggy down the hill and tumbling into a slimy creek — right before the family was heading off to a student concert at the high school.

There were the stories of exploring with friends and carefree summer days, stories of the excitement of heading back to school and more.

It is those stories that made the neighborhood real — and which helped me realize just how special a place Milltown was.
